WEST GOES EAST – CalArts at the Kitchen
The California Institute of the Arts (CalArts) and the Kitchen present West Goes East—CalArts at the Kitchen Wednesday, January 26 to Saturday, January 29. The festival features an array of multimedia performances highlighting the diversity of CalArts alumni in the New York Area.
West Goes East spotlights 23 Artists, 100 performers, and 10 world premiers. Special guests include jazz recording artist Ravi Coltrane, electronic music pioneer Mort Subotnick, US Department of Art and Technology Secretary Randall Packer, Cal Arts President Steven Lavine, Andy Warhol Foundation President Joel Wachs, WNYC radio host David Garland, and film composer David Shire.

Brian Wilbur Grundstrom’s Celebration! To Be Presented By Trinity Chamber Orchestra On January 16 – Richard Fazio To Conduct Washington D.C. Performance
Brian Wilbur Grundstrom’s Celebration! for Chamber Orchestra will be performed by the Trinity Chamber Orchestra, Richard Fazio conductor, on January 16, 2005 at the historic Trinity Theater, 36th and O Streets NW, in Washington DC. The work will be presented along with music by Mozart, Puccini, Gershwin and Cecile Chaminade.
The composer writes about the work, "Celebration! deals with the joy and celebration of life that we need to express after coming to terms with the darker side. With all its excitement and vigor, as well as its interesting unexpected turns, Celebration! makes a great concert opener!" Erik E. Ochsner - Music Director of the SONOS Chamber Orchestra has said of the work, “We had such positive feedback from audiences on how much they enjoyed Brian Grundstrom's work, Celebration! It is modern, yet tonal, enjoyable, and playable."

Dan Locklair’s “Symphony of Seasons” - Symphony No. 1
Dan Locklair’s “Symphony of Seasons” - Symphony No. 1, will be performed by the Salisbury Symphony Orchestra, David Hagy, Music Director on Saturday, January 15, 2005, 7:30 p.m. at Keppel Auditorium on the campus of Catawba College, 2300 W. Innes Street, Salisbury, North Carolina.
The concert will also feature Haydn’s "Introduction to Winter" from The Seasons, Vivaldi’s "Spring" from The Four Seasons, Barber’s “Knoxville: Summer of 1915” and Glazunov’s The Seasons: "Autumn".
Tickets for this concert are $18, with discounts for students and seniors, and may be purchased via the web at http://www.salisburysymphony.org or through the Salisbury Symphony Box Office at (704) 637-4314.
Locklair’s Symphony No. 1, completed in January 2002, was inspired by The Seasons, a collection of poems by eighteenth century British poet James Thomson. The work was the result of an orchestral consortium commission led by the Louisville Orchestra and was funded in part by the Copying Assistance Program of the American Music Center. It was given its World Premiere in October 2002 by Maestro Uriel Siegel and the Louisville Orchestra and was also performed by the North Carolina Symphony led by Maestro Jeffrey Pollock in March 2004.

The Kaufman Center presents Bang on a Can’s Sixth Annual People’s Commissioning Fund (PCF) Concert at Merkin Concert Hall on Thursday, February 3, at 8 PM. New York’s electric chamber ensemble Bang on a Can All-Stars takes on new works by Carla Kihlstedt, Cynthia Hopkins and JG (Jim) Thirlwell, then welcomes special guest Philip Glass to the stage for a rare performance of his seminal early work Music in Similar Motion. The All-Stars are fresh from a U.S. tour with Glass in which they performed early works together with him to celebrate their new recording, Philip Glass—Music in Fifths (Cantaloupe Music). The program will also include one of the very first PCF pieces: Dan Plonsey’s The Plonsey Episodes (commissioned in 1998). A special edition of New Sounds® Live, the program will be hosted by John Schaefer and presented in association with WNYC Radio.
