Our concert calendar is available for listing all performances of contemporary classical music. Bach and Mozart would not be appropriate. If you are a performer or handle PR for a performer or organization and would like direct access to post your notices here, send us a note. If you don't feel that computer savvy, send the releases here and we'll post them for you.

Numinous+ presents Vipassana on Thursday June 22nd at 8:00 PM-Puffin Room Gallery, SoHo
Numinous The Music of Joseph C. Phillips Jr. www.numinousmusic.com
VIPASSANA
Numinous will present Joseph C. Phillips Jr.’s epic four-movement composition, Vipassana on Thursday, June 22, 2006 at 8:00 PM at the Puffin Room Gallery (http://www.puffinroom.com/) located at 435 Broome Street (between Broadway and Crosby Street) in SoHo. Tickets are $12 in advance by RSVP at joephillips@numinousmusic.com or $15 at the door. There will be an informal reception following the performance.
In the Pali language of the early Buddhist texts, vipassana means "to see things as they really are" or insight. Vipassana is a four-movement, 70-minute composition partly inspired by Björk’s Selmasongs as well as photographs from Yann Arthus-Bertrand's Earth from Above series and Jake Rajs' The Hudson River books. Vipassana, which also features the poetry (in the final movement) of Denise Levertov (Variation and Reflection on a Theme by Rilke) is scored for 25 instrumentalists and singers:
Ben Kono, Dan Willis, Ed Xiques (woodwinds), Dave Smith (trumpet, flügelhorn), Deborah Weisz (trombone), Tom Beckham, Dan McCarthy (vibraphones), Rachel Eckroth, Brenda Earle (pianos), Amanda Monaco, Joel Newton (electric guitars), Peter Wise, Wilson Torres (percussion), Charenee Wade, Julie Hardy, Amy Cervini, Jo Lawry, Monika Heidemann (voices), Ana Milosavljevic, Kiku Enomoto (violins), Frank Foerster, Adam Hill (violas), Leigh Stuart, Lauren Riley (violoncellos), Kermit Driscoll (bass), and Joseph C. Phillips Jr. (conductor).
Mr. Phillips states, "Vipassana is an excellent example of my goal as a composer to organically combine the improvisational and rhythmic elements of jazz with the colors, textures, techniques and formal structures of post-minimal music. As a unique and personal composition of expressive beauty and emotional depth, Vipassana also reflects my desire to create music that ‘stimulates the mind and refreshes the spirit.’"
Mr. Phillips founded and has conducted Numinous since the fall of 2000. In September 2003 Numinous released its’ first CD-The Music of Joseph C. Phillips Jr. to critical and audience praise. Mr. Phillips’ music has been performed at the 2003 Steve Reich Festival in the Netherlands, Galapagos Art Space, the Merkin Concert Hall, the Renee Weiler Concert Hall, the Merce Cunningham Dance Studios, among many other venues including a number of universities and colleges. In addition to Numinous, Mr. Phillips is the founder and director of the New York City composer’s federation, Pulse (http:pulsecomposers.typepad.com/).
