Our concert calendar is available for listing all performances of contemporary classical music. Bach and Mozart would not be appropriate. The National Philharmonic will give the world premiere of Steven R. Gerbers Concerto for Clarinet and Orchestra on January 8th at 8 PM at the F. Scott Fitzgerald auditorium in Rockville, Maryland. Gerber is a native of Washington, D.C. and has had numerous performances and premieres with the National Philharmonic.
This current world premiere was written expressly for clarinetist Jon Manasse, who was formerly acting principal clarinet for the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra in New York City. Gerbers concerto is about 20 minutes long in two movements. The first movement consists of a slow introduction, a fast atonal section, and a slow coda similar to the introduction. The second movement has an introduction, a passacaglia and fugue, and then a coda similar to that of the first movement.
This performance will mark the third world premiere for Gerber by the National Philharmonic. Past premieres include his Concerto for Violin and Orchestra(which was premiered at the Kennedy Center), and his Concerto for Cello and Orchestra. In 2005 KOCH International Classics will release a new CD of solo and chamber works by Gerber featuring violinist Kurt Nikkanen (principal violin New York City Ballet), violinists Cho-Liang Lin and Cyrus Beroukhim, cellist Brinton Smith (principal cello Houston Symphony), and pianist Sara Davis Buechner. The recording will contain nine works spanning the period 1967-2001 and will represent a partial survey of Gerbers chamber music to date.
