Our friends at the Metropolis Ensemble will perform a new take on Stravinsky‘s The Rite of Spring called The Rite: Remixed  tonight at Prospect Park in Brooklyn.  Composers Ryan Francis, Leo Leite, and Ricardo Romaneiro have reimagined the Rite of Spring as a piece for chamber orchestra and live electronics.   For those of you unfortunates who don’t live here in the Center of the Universe, you can hear the webcast live on NPR.org starting at 7:30 p.m. ET.   It’s part of the  Wordless Music Series, which you can find out more about in an hourlong pre-concert special beginning at 6:30.

Founded in 2006 by conductor Andrew Cyr, the Metropolis Ensemble performs and commissions new music from some of the most promising new composers today. The group itself also features the finest young chamber musicians around, performing new works alongside the most influential pieces from the 20th century.

Something called Deerhoof is also on the program.

  1. Thanks Lars. It’s a fun listen, though at least from the recording it was a 60/40 hit-miss arrangement. The whole opening is way too “casiotone” and sloppy/hurried, like they just can’t wait to get to the beat. Once they’re there, they pretty much catch the momentum of the rest of the first part.

The second part fails more often than not (typical of most of these arrangments, though never surprising since the original itself comes perilously close to tanking there as well). The final sacrificial dance comes off really limp. But all in all there are enough fairly inspired (and even cheeky) moments along the whole ride to make it worth hearing.

  2. i went to the beth orton show and it didn’t hit me where i live quite like the deerhoof one did. beth orton also doesn’t give away a free score of an upcoming single and invite people to record their own version and upload it to the band’s website. deerhoof wins.

    ps — i am not under 30. =)

  3. Andrea,

I think Jerry does stuff like that just to see if anyone under 30 is still reading.

  4. I ran over a deerhoof on the highway once.

Is this anything like that situation?

i know you said that ’cause you want someone to yell at you. since i haven’t done that in a while, i think i’ll indulge myself:

GET YOUR HEAD OUT OF THE SAND, JERRY!!!

    aaaahhhhh….

    much better.

    =P
