I am all about my music, and my music is all about me… It flows from what I’ve been through, what I’ve seen and how I feel. I live in New York and am on top of the world. Been here since 2004 and I love this city, I love my life here. But, my path has not been easy.   – Ashley Alexandra Dupre

  1. without the sex appeal would she make it in the music industry?

would we even ask that question if we were talking about a guy trying to make it in the music industry?”

Maybe not us, but the label probably would.

“björk seems to do okay in the music industry, and i think shes sexy”

So do I, and she is quite talented. Have you seen “Dancer in the Dark.” She can act as well.

“who makes it in the sex industry without sex appeal? hugh hefner? larry flynt? susie bright?”

But did they not make it due to the sex appeal of their models?

“who makes it in the music industry without sex appeal? harrison birtwistle?”

A very talented and lucky person.

“who makes it in the music industry without music appeal?”

Girl bands, boy bands, Britney Spears, and I would bet Ashley Dupre next. Her voice isn’t all that bad though.

and who’s to say what sex appeal is? björk seems to do okay in the music industry, and i think she’s sexy and i’m sure there are men out there who also find her sexy, but i highly doubt she’s the first person that comes to anyone’s mind when talking about making it in the music industry based on sex appeal.

now, who makes it in the sex industry without sex appeal? hugh hefner? larry flynt? susie bright?

who makes it in the music industry without sex appeal? harrison birtwistle?

who makes it in the music industry without music appeal? put that in your pipe…

  3. Hard to defend a prostitute making 20,000 dollars, or whatever exactly, to have sex with actors she would probably have sex (let alone corrupt politicians) with for free on any given night if he promised to boost her career. And without the sex appeal, would she make it in the music industry? Hard to say. I like her music, but pop is all about selling sex, so that’s just another reason why she should succeed in that arena. But because she is a woman does that make her any different than a man, no. As Andrea said, the thought of a male prostitute might make people uneasy and what a man would do to make it big in pop is no different than a woman. People just avoid that and move on to what keeps the masses’ minds unfocused and flickering in and out of a BOOBTUBE set.

  4. oh james, you’re going to make the gentlemen who frequent this site very uncomfortable with that observation… =)

  5. “attention whore”
yup, whenever a girl stands out, she’s an attention whore. but when a guy’s name is plastered all over the place — dbr, philip glass, osvaldo golijov, nico muhly (just naming names, i have nothing against these guys, i could insert many other names) that’s normal, ’cause that’s what guys deserve for their hard work. ” – Andrea

Prostitution isn’t just a female profession.

  6. pay women to write here? that’s a knee-slapper. i mean, what? instead of paying them for the sex they are supposed to just give us dweebs for free? gee wilikers, why wouldn’t a broad want to hang out in our little clubhouse? it’s such a blast! me and my bros are so cool and funny. check it out…

“she has the looks for a run-of-the-mill pop performer”
why bother to succeed on actual talent or hard work when you’ve got a pretty face and boobs? why aspire to anything? in the 80’s the band heart basically got destroyed because the record label and mtv pitted the two very and equally talented wilson sisters against one another because dark haired ann was gaining too much weight, so the powers that be kept pushing her aside in favor of the svelte, blond nancy. i guess ann, despite her powerful voice and songwriting talents didn’t even have the looks for a run-of-the-mill pop performer. too bad she didn’t join us ugly-ass lesbians on the nu-classical music front. she might have been able to continue her musical career!

“her essay is a real Heiligenstadt Testament… her music… is beyond abysmal”
of course! she’s too pretty and too sorry for herself to actually write anything good, duh… just goes to show you, t&a don’t mean everything, ha ha ha… and Juno was a bad movie because it was written by a former prostitute. and prostitutes aren’t supposed to aspire to anything (unless julia roberts is playing the role).

i mean, it’s not like we mean anything bad when we say those things. it’s just you dykes have no sense of humor. don’t we all just want a little t&a?

  7. “what an attention whore?” Who, Spitzer? His life fits that description far more than his erstwhile courtesan.” – Jw

I believe Mr. Spitzer is the John in this comedy. Tragic comedy perhaps, perhaps not. Maybe Mr. Spitzer and his erstwhile companion are meant to be.

  8. “what an attention whore?” Who, Spitzer? His life fits that description far more than his erstwhile courtesan. Viewing the family as victims is also misplaced; they did nothing, but somehow we seek to apply the (misplaced) social stigma of prostitution unto them, when it is properly placed upon Spitzer. For that reason I have empathy for them, in that concerning our basic sexuality, our society hasn’t grown up.

  9. Sorry, but there are other people who deserve my empathy in this saga: Spitzer’s wife and kids. They are the ones who have walked away with the raw end, not Ms. Dupre. The media would be wise to not focus on the escort, but the victims…the family.

  10. Has anyone here ever said “what an attention whore?” I never thought I would…, until now. Silly people. He paid way too much and she is going to the bank on that and much much more. Such is the way of the world and the little, hollow stories we read next to the millions of insignificant bylines.

  11. She may or may not have had it hard, but yes, she’s still a human being. That said, she made a conscious choice to go into a particular line of work which like all, has an upside and downside. Frankly, her line of work should be legal; the fact that it is not colors our perception of her every action. As for her music, it’s completely consistent with what’s played on hip-hop stations and in concert. I’m just surprised that she couldn’t afford a better demo considering her earning power. Did you see her apartment? I’m in the wrong business.

  12. I don’t understand why it’s so hard to think of this person and write about her as if she were a human being? Why the sarcasm? Why the hate?

I’m not trying to pick on you guys, but thinking a little bit about what kind of experiences might make a woman become a prostitute might give you all a perspective that translates into…oh I dunno…empathy? Something that a drop off can help a young person in crisis steer clear of decisions that lead them into drug abuse or prostitution.

I think it’s easier though to post her photos, throw up angry comments about the media and move on…it’s a way of making someone less than human. No “frightening history…” to deal with.

  13. Yes, her MySpace Music essay is a real Heiligenstadt Testament. Have you subjected yourselves to her, um, “music?” Beyond abysmal.

  14. Well if she plays her cards right, the “music career” that she dreams of will probably come true. What is it, any publicity is good publicity? She certainly has the looks for a run-of-the-mill pop performer, and if her life story is slightly interesting, we could see an Oxygen reality show come of this. And judging by her music, she’s right up mainstream’s alley.

We’ve all had “rough” lives in one way or another, and if her story is true, it’s nothing new. Just another role model for our nations youth.

    Move ya body…

  15. I think she’s beautiful. Sounds like she’s had a rough life – probably a life few here would want to imagine enduring. Maybe scandal will allow her change her life for the better?

A couple nights ago I was reading a new interview with composer vocalist Diamanda Galas where at one point she discusses prostitution.

From another interview where she discusses Aileen Wuomos and the people behind the film Monster:

“For them she never really existed anyway, she didn’t have a life, a frightening history to detail or discuss compassionately; she was just a photo-op…”

    Hmm.
