New Release Tuesday: Sallinen, Schreker on DVD; Harris, Hanson, Takemitsu on Naxos

Naxos of America is releasing two particularly interesting DVDs from its distributed labels on Tuesday, as well as new Harris, Hanson, and Takemitsu CDs from Naxos.

Aulis Sallinen's opera The Palace is a meditation on authoritarian power whose libretto draws from both Mozart's The Abduction fromt the Seraglio as well as the novel The Emporer by Polish writer Ryszard Kapuscinski. The Arthaus DVD of the 1995 Savonlinna Opera Festival production includes a bonus documentary on the work. Critics loved the 2005 Salzburg Festival production of Schreker's Die Gezeichneten that EuroArts is releasing on Tuesday (a clip is available on the opera's page on Naxos.com).

Roy Harris' Symphonies 3 and 4, performed by Marin Alsop and the Colorado Symphony and Chorus, and a disc with Howard Hanson's Organ Concerto with the Philadelphia Virtuosi Chamber Orchestra and organist Joseph Jackson are out on Naxos this week. Naxos' Japanese Classics series continues with a disc of music from Toru Takemitsu with Marin Alsop and the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra.
